Today is election day in 5/6th of the city of Knoxville. District 5 (incumbent Charlie Thomas) and three at-large council members have two years remaining. Polls are open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Residents who have tested positive or have symptoms of Covid-19 can still vote. First, phone the Election Commission at 865-215-2480. Second, go to the Health Department at 140 Dameron Ave. Staff from the Health Department and workers from the Knox County Election Commission will assist voters, using Covid-19 safety precautions.
Three of 13 candidates for Knoxville City Council will leave us today (8/31). The other 10 will advance to the Nov. 3 citywide election. When the music stops, who will be missing a seat?
- South Knoxville (District 1): David Hayes, Elizabeth Murphy or Tommy Smith.
- Northeast Knoxville (4): Jim Klonaris, Jen McMahon or Lauren Rider.
- East Knoxville and Downtown (6): Deidra Harper, Garrett Holt or Gwen McKenzie.
Four years ago, second place in District 4 was a tie, between Amelia Parker and Harry Tindell. The city council selected Tindell to go on the ballot; Parker ran a write-in campaign; and Rider won handily. Parker came back in 2019 and won an at-large seat.
