Thomas William Harper, founder of Harper Auto Square, has died at age 71. His obituary (here) tells of an ambitious man who always loved cars. Born in Blount County, he grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and returned to East Tennessee to study industrial engineering at the University of Tennessee.
He married Janet McCampbell in 1980 and soon established Harper Porsche Audi Jaguar. The business grew to include seven dealerships, 13 franchises, a body shop and a collection of classic cars. His children now run the business.
Mr. Harper is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter, Samma Harper Bromley; son, Shannon Harper; their families and many friends.
A memorial service led by Dr. Bill Barron and the Rev. Mark Lampley will be held at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 30, with reception to follow in Barron Hall.
