The Blessing of the Animals is Sunday, October 6, 4 p.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 800 S. Northshore Drive in Knoxville. Pets of all kinds will receive a “blessing;” dogs, cats, birds, horses, snakes, fish, hamsters and many other species have received a blessing in the past.
At this time of the year, St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), the Patron Saint of animals, is honored for his love of all creatures. A short service will take place in the church followed by the blessing. Pets are welcome inside the sanctuary and may sit with their owners. Following the service, join other pet parents outside for people and pet treats.
Lambs Pet Ministry at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension welcomes people to donate a bag of cat or dog food or a monetary donation for the Pet Pantry at FISH Hospitality Pantry, a community-wide food pantry.
“We all love our pets, and we invite everyone to enjoy this special event where your pets can receive a blessing,” said Lisa Cope, director of the Lambs Pet Ministry at Ascension. “This event is open to the public and all animals are welcome. This is a particularly fun event for children. It’s great to see so many different pets – dogs, fish, cats and many more, sitting in the pews.”
