Steve Swafford, 64, former standout athlete at Powell High School, has died.
Swafford, a football running back, basketball guard and baseball infielder, was one of the best all-around athletes ever in the Knoxville area, said Mike McConkey, a teammate beginning with boyhood games at Inskip-Norwood.
“He was in the Ron Widby class as a multi-talented athlete. Steve was a natural,” said McConkey.
Swafford received a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee in 1972 but suffered a career-ending shoulder injury as a freshman.
Mr. Swafford is survived by his wife, Royette Viles-Swafford, sons Joe Swafford and Dallas Roach, and mother, Patricia Swafford.
The family home is on Bell Road in Halls. The family plans a private celebration of his life.
