Exit goblins, enter Santa.

The Southern Market’s Holiday Open House is always the first weekend in November, which this year put the opening on the day after Halloween. By the time the Southern Market opened its doors on Thursday morning, it had been transformed into a winter wonderland.

It is the 22nd annual holiday open house for the marketplace at 5400 Homberg Dr. It continues Friday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4, from 1-5 p.m.

Sharon Partin of Partin Arts & Design led a wreath-making workshop at Thursday’s opening day. On Friday, Loretta Crowder of Centerpiece will lead a bow-making presentation at 10 a.m., followed by a tablescapes with Joyce Simms of The Painted Pig at 11 a.m.

Saturday includes a take-and-make workshop by Kila Whitson of Whitson and Co., as she helps participants turn small pieces into one-of-a-kind accent furniture. (Cost for the workshop is $55 plus applicable sales tax. Reservations are required for all presentations, boxed lunches and workshops.)

Whimsical holiday items are everywhere at Southern Market’s Holiday Open House Nov. 2-4.

More than a dozen vendors and artists will host all-day trunk shows Saturday, including artists Jenny Dennis and Michaelanne Collins, jewelry artist Jan Trewhitt, and artist/writer Danielle Asher. Through Sunday, you may register to win a print of the country-themed holiday painting Michaelanne Collins created for the market’s open house invitation.

Friday and Saturday, you may reserve a noon boxed lunch from Betty Melrose of The Basket Lunch ($10). Saturday will also include live music from Shaun Abbott from 11:30 to 2:30.

The Southern Market is open Sundays from 1-5 from now through Christmas and will have later Thursday shopping hours during the month of December only.

The shop features more than 40 local merchants and 50 local artists and artisans. Year-round, shoppers at Southern Market can find boutique clothing at Salt & Pepper, custom creations at Embellish Gifts and Southern Accents, home accessories at Accentuate the Positive and My Little Room and More, and much more, including unique Vol- and sorority-related items.

Southern Market’s owner, Susan Worthington, founded the shop with her mother, Frances Sexton, in the late 1990s.
