The Tennessee Valley Fair has come and gone, but it was definitely a great experience for the South Knoxville Elementary art class taught by Betsy Hobkirk.

This is the third year South Knoxville Elementary School participated in the TN Valley Fair Demolition Derby. Each year a student’s dad, Ned Anderson of Anderson Automotive and Towing, has brought a banged-up car for the students to paint. Ms. Hobkirk uses her art class to allow students to go outside and paint the car with colorful paints.

Hobkirk says, “Sometimes the art car has a theme, but mainly it’s an opportunity for students to have fun and do something unique. Painting the art car for the demolition derby is definitely a highlight for students. It’s a great way to start the school year!”

Once the students finish painting the car, Anderson picks it up and takes it to the derby.

Of course, the South Knox Elementary families bring their children to the fair’s derby, so they can cheer on their art car and driver. Ever the consummate teacher, Hobkirk videos the derby to show the class, since not everyone can make it to the event.

This year South Knox Elementary won first place for best looking car and third place in the derby.

Now that is the way to kickstart a year!
