Charles E. “Charlie” Guthrey, 94, has died. Family will welcome friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with a celebration of life service to follow.

After college, he joined George Galloway to form the partnership Galloway & Guthrey, Architects-Engineers, in 1959. According to his obituary, the men earned many professional awards and particularly enjoyed working with churches. Mr. Guthrey was a deacon at Central Baptist Bearden and was instrumental in the expansion of the church facility.

He is survived by wife Hazel, their children and grandchildren.

His obituary is a tribute to a hard-working man. Charlie lost his father at age 11 and worked construction as a child and teenager. He put himself through college at Tennessee Tech in 34 months, while playing football and serving as president of the Baptist Student Union.

After “retiring” from his company at age 62, Charlie and Hazel traveled in a motor home to church locations across the country, doing volunteer church construction. He frequently served as architect, engineer, general contractor and on-site manager at no charge.
