Services to honor the life of Hyrum Plaas will be held Friday, March 8, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 11837 Grigsby Chapel Road. The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. The funeral, under the direction of Bishop Jason Bohne, will be at 7 p.m.

Dr. Plaas, 90, of Knoxville, died March 1. He grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from the University of Utah, receiving his doctorate in 1959. He was a professor of political science at Brigham Young University, Pacific University, University of Nevada-Reno, and the University of Tennessee.

He served as an assistant to Gov. Buford Ellington, was director of the Bureau of Public Administration at UT and served on the Appalachian Regional Commission, authoring pioneering legislation to establish regionalization of healthcare and a system of emergency medical services.

Dr. Plaas was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in church leadership positions most of his life. Additional information here.
