Douglas Brown Oliver was principal at Halls Middle School after succeeding the legendary principal and school founder James A. Ivey. Mr. Oliver passed away Oct. 24 at age 73.

Mr. Oliver grew up in South Knoxville and began his teaching career at Seymour High School. After one year, he moved to Gresham Junior High, where he taught and coached for the next 18 years. Beth Kinnane, community news editor at KnoxTNToday, was his student at Gresham. She recalls him fondly and said he excited his students about history, government and politics.

Jay Wormsley was assistant principal with Mr. Oliver at Halls Middle School. He said, “Doug was a great leader and friend. He took a chance on me and I am grateful for his leadership and friendship. Doug was truly one of the good guys. I will miss him.

Wormsley recalled that Mr. Oliver did not want his picture hung in the foyer of the school.
“He finally agreed, but only after they included students in the picture with him.”

After retirement in 2009, Oliver wrapped up a 39-year career in education, having influenced hundreds of students and teachers. He requested no services at this time. Wife Suzanne asked friends to make comments on the tribute page of his obituary (here).
