The Tennessee School Board Association (TSBA) announced Lily Shelton, a senior at Oak Ridge High School, as its east district student recognition award winner and Jay Adams, a volunteer at Jefferson Middle School, as its east district volunteer award winner last week. Both were recognized at TSBA’s east fall district meeting where Oak Ridge schools took home both major individual awards.
The student achievement award is given annually to a student from each of TSBA’s regional districts who has achieved distinction in the areas of academics, community leadership and engagement as part of its student recognition award program.
Lily Shelton has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is the current president of Interact Club. Lily is a member of ORHS Student Council, the National Honor Society and Wildcats for Change, which aims to improve the culture and climate of Oak Ridge High School. Additionally, the senior is a member of the Youth Advisory Board, Youth Leadership Oak Ridge and the varsity tennis team.
The volunteer recognition award is given to one school volunteer from each region who has distinguished themselves by demonstrating exceptional commitment to volunteerism in a local school district through exemplary leadership, creativity, cooperation and hard work. At Jefferson Middle School, Jay Adams helps with the STEM manufacturing class that focuses on providing hands-on learning opportunities in many facets of manufacturing.
In total, there are 23 districts in the east region that Lily and Jay competed against for the award. Lily now becomes a finalist for the statewide student recognition award to be presented at the TSBA annual convention in November, which will include a $2,000 scholarship from TSBA and a $2,200 scholarship from Energy Systems Group. Adams will be entered as a finalist for the statewide school volunteer recognition award, which includes a $1,000 grant to the school of their choice to be presented at the TSBA Conference next month.
