We are seven weeks into our 2022 Read City voyage, Anchors Aweigh, and we are already handing out prizes! For voracious or steady readers, the first goal of 45 hours is already in the bag.
To redeem prizes, just drop into any Knox County Public Library and show your badge in the Beanstack tracker app or a completed map. Kiddos and teens can choose between ocean-themed plushies or Lego kits. Adults can choose a travel mug, reusable straw or tote-all items that can help us save the oceans.
Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs has challenged all Knox Countians to pick up a book and log their reading hours as a show of support to the schools. The Read City program aims to help raise the third-grade reading rate by encouraging families, organizations and businesses to make reading a priority. Currently, fewer than 40% of Knox County third graders have mastered reading, which is an important milestone that predicts future success in school and life.
So far, more than 4,700 people have joined the challenge. They include individuals, families and groups including day cares, after school programs, churches and schools. The great news is that it’s not too late to get started and win some prizes.
