Get Out & Play: New Harvest Park

Carol EvansUncategorized

If you miss the fresh produce and artisan products available at local farmers markets, you are in luck as New Harvest Park Farmers Market will host five winter markets inside the New Harvest Park Community Building, 4775 New Harvest Lane. Market dates are 3-6 p.m., Dec. 14, Jan. 25, Feb. 8 and March 22.

Vendors will offer a variety of fresh, locally grown, seasonal produce, meat, eggs, baked goods and honey. And just in time for holiday gift giving – handmade craft and bath items will also be available.

While there, adults and kids alike may take advantage of the park’s amenities for a little outside activity. The farm-themed playground includes a barn play structure with age-appropriate slides. Swings, and riding and climbing equipment reminiscent of farm animals and buildings are featured, and benches are placed nearby for those watching the little ones.

In the summertime, the splashpad is a popular place on hot afternoons.

For a leisurely walk or a more energetic hike, two trails circle the park. A quarter-mile paved loop stays close to the playground, community building and amphitheater, while a longer, half-mile natural trail heads up the ridge amid the hardwoods that border the park and then winds back down near the wetland pond. Both trails are designated easy to moderate difficulty.

The market is set to open for the 2018 season on April 12 at 3 p.m.

The New Harvest Farmers Market participates in the Fre$h Savings program, that works in conjunction with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Under it, participants who spend up to $20 per transaction at the market will get a matching amount in tokens to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at the market.
