Bioethicist, physician retired in Knoxville

Howard A. Brody M.D. Ph.D., 75, a pioneer in the field of medical ethics, died July 22, 2024, at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Dr. Brody and his wife, Daralyn, moved to Knoxville in 2017 after his retirement as the director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Brody studied at Michigan State University, earning doctorates in both medicine and philosophy. Topics of interest included medical ethics, end-of-life care, the placebo effect and ways to cap rising medical costs. He practiced family medicine and taught college courses, in addition to his role as director of the Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences at Michigan State University.

Survivors, all out of state, include two children and their families plus a sister. Additional biographical information here. Dr. Brody located to Knoxville to enjoy the mountains and the seasons of East Tennessee.
