What’s Poppin’ at Stanley’s
Today we share the unusual ‘Mariken’ maidenhair tree, a dwarf Ginkgo variety from the innovative Iseli Nursery in Oregon.
This compact, bushy Ginkgo biloba ‘Mariken’ was discovered in 1995 as a witch’s broom growing in a Ginkgo tree in the Netherlands. It has proven an excellent find with the same fan-shaped green leaves characteristic of larger Ginkgo trees – that turn bright yellow in fall – but ‘Mariken’ stays very small, reaching around 6 feet tall and wide at maturity. Its thick, spreading branches are loaded with a dense arrangement of foliage.
This slow-growing (3- to 6-inches of growth per year) deciduous conifer makes a small, high-interest feature tree with its flat, rounded, growth habit which is perfect for either small gardens or containers. Requires a full sun location.
