A memorial to Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss has been set up in the heart of Gibbs at Harbison’s Crossroads, the intersection of Emory Road and Tazewell Pike. Knauss, 23, was killed August 26 by an ISIS-K suicide bomber outside the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. This roadside memorial includes a drop box so those paying their respects can leave condolence cards for the family. It is checked regularly and will remain in place for two weeks. The Gibbs High School graduate was among the last U.S. armed forces members to pay the ultimate price for service in Afghanistan.
