Race Against Hunger underway

Since 1992, Food City – in partnership with its customers – has conducted the annual Race Against Hunger campaign to raise funds for local non-profit hunger relief organizations.

“Hunger is a serious problem throughout our region and Food City is proud to be a part of the Race Against Hunger,” says Steven C. Smith, Food City’s president and chief executive officer.

The promotion started Oct. 20 and will continue through Nov. 28. Customers can contribute $1, $3 or $5 at each Food City checkout. With every dollar contribution made, customers using their ValuCard are electronically entered for a chance to win their choice of a spectacular season of racing at Bristol Motor Speedway or a $2,500 contribution to the charity of their choice.

One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit hunger relief and charitable organizations throughout the region. Approximately six meals are provided for every dollar donated.

“Millions of Americans need food assistance each year. The Race Against Hunger is one way we can help those in need right here in our own area,” says Kevin Stafford, vice president of marketing for Food City.

Last year’s program raised over $512,000.

Miss Food City

Alexandria Alder of Johnson City was crowned Miss Food City 2020 at the annual pageant held Oct. 26 at The McClothlin Center for the Arts in Emory, Virginia. Alder, 20, is majoring in fashion design at East Tennessee State University. She succeeds Megan Grace Stanley of Abingdon, Virginia, who held the title in 2019.

Emma Conn of Knoxville was selected as first runner-up, and Megan Parton of Seymour was named second runner-up. Alder also received the Miss Photogenic award.

The pageant was directed by the Twin City Woman’s Club, with event proceeds benefitting their sponsored projects and charities.
