Services are today for Haynes C. Smith, who died Aug. 19 at age 92. Mr. Smith was a stalwart member of the Bearden Rotary Club where he was a past president and an honorary lifetime member.
The burial will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 9:30 a.m. at the East Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery on John Sevier Highway with full military honors. Following the burial, there will be a receiving of friends at Bearden United Methodist Church from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 12:30.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frances Burton Smith; daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Paul Alexander, Knoxville; Tracy and Joe Hazelwood, Fort Mill, S.C.; three grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Haynes Smith.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army Infantry Combat Division in the South Pacific during World War II and graduated from Old Dominion University. He was active at Bearden United Methodist Church, including head usher for several years. Memorials may be made to the church or to HonorAir Knoxville.
