A Knoxville surgeon and a Powell-based otolaryngologist are leaders in the Tennessee Medical Association.

Matthew L. Mancini, MD, is president of the TMA, the state’s largest professional organization for doctors with more than 9,000 members.

Dr. Mancini earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, completed medical school at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he still practices today with University Surgeons Associates. He is board certified in general surgery and has held several academic and hospital appointments during the past decade, including serving as chief of the Division of General Surgery at the UT Graduate School of Medicine since 2014.

Elise Cheng Denneny, MD, FACS, is president-elect of the TMA. She practices with Greater Knoxville Ear Nose & Throat in Powell. When she takes office as the 2019-2020 TMA president, she will be the third female president in TMA history, following Drs. Phyllis Miller and Nita Shumaker.

Dr. Denneny was born in Chicago. She attended Northwestern University, obtaining her medical degree from Rush Medical College then completing a residency in otolaryngology head and neck surgery with a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery finishing in 1987. She came to East Tennessee in 1987. She and her husband, James, have two grown children.
