On November 7, Ritta Elementary School held its annual Veterans Day program as it transformed its gymnasium into a vibrant tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces.
Over 100 veterans, first responders and their families joined for a performance by the fourth grade students as the event kicked off with the students singing patriotic songs, making history come alive for the audience.
One of the highlights was the guest speaker, pastor and Silver Star recipient Dr. Gerald E. McGinnis, the founding pastor of Park West Church in Knoxville, who shared his experiences and the importance of service.
Dr. McGinnis served in the Army during the Vietnam War and after 45 years was awarded the Bronze Star of Valor for his service at that time. In 2021, this award was upgraded to a Silver Star. Presently, the Rev. McGinnis serves as a chaplain to the FBI, ATF and is a chaplain coordinator for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. He is trained as a critical incident stress debriefer and assists the FBI as a southeastern response team member.
Principal Shawna Ernst echoed the sentiment of all in attendance: “We love honoring our veterans and first responders with this annual celebration.”
