Jackie’s Dream serves down-home cooking

The Dining Duo found another eatery gem tucked on the side of Woodland Avenue in Jackie’s Dream, actually returning twice now because the fried chicken is “oh so good.” Since we both got the chicken, I can’t comment on other main meats, but the fried okra and, of course, my favorite fried green tomatoes were perfect! My partner raved over the greens.

Jackie’s is down-home country fare at its best so don’t be in a rush when you visit, because meals are prepared as customers order, from fresh ingredients and family recipes passed down for generations.

Jackie Griffin started her first restaurant several years ago but was forced to move due to issues with the location. Short on funding to relocate, her friends set up a “Go Fund Me” and the funds to move her into the current location were raised in five days. The rest is history, as they say. The current location has remained open through thick and thin including the pandemic.

Once people discover this local treasure, they travel from all over the state to get their favorites from a menu that names dishes after her family’s recipes: Mama’s Cabbage, Nanny Mary’s Potato Salad, Cousin Ruby’s Meatloaf, Granddaddy CD’s Collard Greens or the Knox Hot chicken, a special recipe. I loved the regular fried thighs and wings.

Jackie’s Dream is located at 1008 E. Woodland Avenue, 37917 and is open Wednesday-Sunday 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Closed Monday & Tuesday

The Dining Duo is looking for the “hidden gem eateries “where the locals fill the breakfast and lunch hour; those local haunts tucked into the out of way or right on the way places missed in the hustle and bustle of the day. Email us your recommendations at email here.
