Karns High teachers Cynthia Rhoden and Seth Tinsley took their marketing, vocal, music, ensemble and musical theater classes to the Tennessee Theater before the opening of Hamilton last week. The trip gave the students an opportunity to learn about possible careers. During the tour and presentation, students were excited to discover that Karns High School will offer eight of the career pathways next year that align to the performing arts including marketing, entrepreneurship, business management, structural systems, mechanical/electrical/plumbing, A/V production, digital arts and design, and journalism.

Twelve student athletes at Knoxville Catholic High School have signed letters of intent, charting their academic and athletic careers. Congratulations to Ella Jabaley (Averett University-volleyball), Gig Sompayrac (Anderson University-tennis), Will Ramsey (Young Harris College- lacrosse), Henry Bertucci (Carson-Newman University-football), Richie DeLaCruz (Virginia Peninsula CC- baseball), Evon Kolesar (King University- baseball), Ryan Theobald (King University-baseball), Miller Spence (Milligan University –baseball), Jacob Camfield (Asbury University- baseball), Joey LaMattina (Lincoln Memorial University- baseball), Emma Ackermann (University of Mount Union- swimming), Evan Deichart (University of the Cumberlands-cross country/track). Congratulations to these students and also to the parents, teachers, coaches, counselors and mentors who have played a huge role in these honors.

Who doesn’t love the Chocolate Chess Pie at Buttermilk Sky Pie! Now, you can buy one without guilt during the month of February, because you will be helping support programming for grandparents who are serving as parents through the “GAP” program! So, you can really have your cake “or pie” and eat it too and still help others!

If you recognize this “Mimi,” you wouldn’t be surprised that she is trying on her grandson’s lacrosse helmet for his amusement! Martha Jean Bratton has done many crazy and fun things over her years as a teacher, school principal, mom and certainly as a Mimi!

Cedar Bluff Branch Library welcomes Dr. Tom Haddox, UT English Professor, on February 21 at 6:30 p.m. He will lead a discussion of “Intruder in the Dust” by William Faulkner. Pick up your copy today at your local branch!

Hardin Valley Academy Theater’s production of A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen is being performed by the advance theater students in the high school’s auditorium on February 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. as well as Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. John.sides@knoxschools.org for questions. Tickets can be ordered here.

Hardin Valley Academy Aquatics Hawks finished second in the KISL city meet and competed in the state meet this past weekend. Pictured in the center are seniors Egan Rawn, Zoe Feldblum, Aubrey Hall and Caroline Martin.

Karns High School Lady Beavers basketball coach, Lauren Trent, has been named District 3-4 AAAA Coach of the Year. This is a huge honor for Coach Trent who is in her first year as the Beavers coach and led the team to its first winning season since 2006, finishing second in a tough District 3-4A. Before Karns, Coach Trent spent seven years as the assistant coach at Oak Ridge High School, going to the state tournament three times. She also teaches eighth grade American history at Karns Middle School where she went to middle school. She graduated from HVA in 2011 and played four years of basketball for Maryville College. She is definitely leaving a legacy and to quote one of her fans: “She is an amazing person, coach, friend and teacher.”
