Tonight is the beginning of the end for the Ula Love Doughty Carousel Theatre, with the last opportunities to catch a performance at UT’s legendary “theatre in the round” before the structure is demolished and replaced.
The Tennessee Valley Players and University of Tennessee School of Music Choral present “Something Rotten” after a two-year hiatus from their annual summer collaboration. Set in the Renaissance, “Something Rotten” is an outrageous, crowd-pleasing, Tony Award-winning musical farce.
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.
The production runs through June 19, with showtimes Thursday–Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 (ages 12 and up) and $15 (children under 12) and can be purchased here or at the box office as early as 45 minutes prior to curtain. The Carousel Theatre is located at 1714 Andy Holt Avenue.
