JP Coffin’s / Coffin Shoe Company will be closed Saturday, October 19, 2024, to honor the life of company patriarch James Park Coffin Sr., who passed away Oct. 11 at age 97. Coffin’s is a fourth-generation shoe and women’s apparel store at 5925 Kingston Pike, in the heart of Bearden.

Jim Coffin was known as Knoxville’s favorite “sit and fit” shoe salesperson. Mary Linda Schwarzbart spoke for many customers: “It was a pleasure to take my mother-in-law and stepmother to Coffin’s for shoes. Mr. Coffin was so kind and helpful to them, made sure the shoes fit correctly and comfortably. I always confident they would be treated well.”

Jim was born and raised in Knoxville. He graduated in business from the University of Tennessee and served in the U.S. Army at the end of WW II and later in Korea as an officer. He was awarded two purple hearts.

A 56-year member of the Rotary Club of Bearden, he was also a past president. Jim was on the planning committee for the 100-year celebration of Knoxville High School. He belonged to West Hills Presbyterian Church and was an avid Vol fan.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 19, at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, 3500 Tazewell Pike, Fountain City. His full obituary is here.
